The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to question particular decisions from the official, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
